Engaging in a Dialogue: Exploring the Impact of AI on Learning and Teaching
Three weeks ago, I commented on an insightful post by Charles Adkins on LinkedIn. Due to character limits, I couldn’t fully address the question he posed about how AI is disrupting standard processes and its impact on education and teaching. However, I believe this is a multifaceted question with various stakeholders involved.

AI is revolutionizing traditional education and learning methods. Students now have the opportunity to use AI tools for tasks like book reports, which raises important considerations for managing and adapting education. Here are some thoughts on the matter:

For Students:

1. Equal access to AI tools is crucial to ensure fairness in the learning process. Currently, some students have access while others do not, creating an unequal playing field.

2. Students should focus on developing essential skills like confidence and interaction with peers, rather than relying solely on AI-generated work or answers.

3. Transparency is key. Students should truthfully disclose the extent to which they have used AI in their creations and outputs.

4. AI cannot replace the significance of learning and practicing vital skills such as debating, presenting, networking, collaboration, social skills, quick thinking, and real-time problem-solving with peers.

5. Students should be aware that AI should not be used for cheating, shortcuts, or substituting actual hands-on learning experiences.

For Teachers:

1. Teachers should be able to identify assignments completed with the assistance of AI.

2. AI could potentially help in checking homework and reports, allowing teachers to focus more on teaching.

For Schools and Universities:

– Establish guidelines and protocols to set rules and foster acceptance of AI and other technological advancements. There should be a consensus, avoiding discrepancies where some view it as cheating while others see it as promoting tech innovation.
– Equip teachers with necessary tools and knowledge to effectively teach in an AI-infused environment.
– Clearly communicate to students the expectations regarding technical and digital transformation.
– Offer technology and digital innovation or advanced technology classes to prepare teachers and students for the upcoming third industrial revolution.

These are some considerations for managing the impact of AI on education.
